Experience the Hungry Ghost Festival (Zhong Yuan Jie) in Chinatown Singapore. During the seventh lunar month, Chinatown comes alive with traditional rituals, getai performances, wayang (Chinese opera), and communal feasting as the Chinese community honours ancestors and wandering spirits.
About the Festival
The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as Zhong Yuan Jie, is observed on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. Throughout the entire seventh lunar month, it is believed that the gates of the underworld open and spirits roam the earthly realm.
In Chinatown Singapore, this is one of the most atmospheric times of the year. The streets and open spaces come alive with traditional observances that have been practised for generations.
What to Experience in Chinatown
- Getai Performances — Lively outdoor stage performances featuring songs, comedy skits, and dialect operas. Front rows are traditionally left empty for the "special audience"
- Wayang (Chinese Opera) — Traditional opera troupes perform classic tales on temporary stages across Kreta Ayer
- Auction Dinners — Community fundraising dinners with lively auctioneers — a uniquely Singaporean tradition
- Incense & Offerings — See elaborate paper offerings, joss sticks, and ritual preparations at temples and along the streets
- Street Bazaar — Seasonal vendors selling festival supplies, paper effigies, and traditional snacks
Important Customs
Visitors are welcome to observe and enjoy the festivities. Please be respectful of ritual offerings on the ground — avoid stepping on them. Photography is generally welcome at getai and opera performances.
