Observing the 7th Month Festival in Chinatown: A Guide to Respectful Practices

As the vibrant cultural tapestry of Singapore prepares for the annual 7th Month Festival, Chinatown invites both residents and visitors to partake in this significant observance. Starting on Saturday, August 22, 2025, this period, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival or Zhong Yuan Festival, is a time for honouring ancestors and spirits.
Ensuring a Safe and Clean Chinatown
To uphold the sanctity of these traditions while maintaining the safety and cleanliness of our beloved Chinatown, we kindly request everyone to utilise the designated burning bins for all offerings. Your cooperation ensures a respectful environment for everyone and preserves the charm of our heritage district.
Locating Designated Burning Bins
During the 7th Month Festival, from August 22 to September 22, 2025, four specially designated burning bins will be conveniently placed within the Chinatown Street Market area for your offerings:
- The back alley of 55 Pagoda Street
- The back alley of 42 Smith Street
- The back alley of Trengganu Street
- The back alley of 6 Sago Street
We urge all participants to strictly adhere to the guidelines against burning joss papers directly on streets, walkways, or into drains. This practice is prohibited as it poses fire hazards and contributes to litter, detracting from the communal effort to keep Chinatown pristine.
Let us come together to celebrate and observe the 7th Month Festival with mindfulness and respect, ensuring Chinatown remains a vibrant, safe, and clean hub for all. Your thoughtful participation contributes significantly to preserving Singapore's rich cultural heritage.
