Buddha Tooth Relic Temple Visit Guide and Lian Xin Vegetarian Food Court

Visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown and eat at Lian Xin Vegetarian Food Court. Hours, dress code, nearby hawker food, and how to combine both in one stop.

The temple most visitors photograph — and the vegetarian food court inside it

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum on South Bridge Road is the red-and-gold landmark you see as soon as you leave Chinatown MRT toward Kreta Ayer. It is free to enter, air-conditioned, and one of the few places in the district where you can move from a working Buddhist hall to a plate of vegetables without crossing a main road.

That second part is Lian Xin Vegetarian Food Court, the temple’s vegetarian canteen. It is already one of the highest-click search queries on this site, alongside “Buddha Tooth Relic Temple food”. Both belong on a first-day Chinatown itinerary.

Visiting the temple

  • Address: 288 South Bridge Road, at the corner of Sago Street
  • Nearest MRT: Chinatown (NE4/DT19), about a five-minute walk; Maxwell (TE18) is equally close
  • Typical hours: grounds open from morning through evening; the relic chamber and museum floors can close earlier than the main hall — check the notice board on arrival
  • Dress: cover shoulders and knees; remove hats; speak quietly
  • Photography: usually allowed in courtyards; follow signs inside shrine halls

Give yourself 45–75 minutes if you want the main hall, the mezzanine museum, and the rooftop garden. During Hungry Ghost month (through 11 September) and Mid-Autumn evenings (from 18 September) the streets outside are busier; go in the late morning for a calmer visit.

Lian Xin Vegetarian Food Court

Lian Xin serves Buddhist vegetarian food at hawker prices inside the temple complex. Typical hours are 7am to 3pm daily, so this is a breakfast or lunch stop, not dinner. The value sets — rice with vegetables and a protein-style main — are the reason regulars return. Expect a tray, a short queue at weekday lunch, and an air-conditioned room.

If you arrive after 3pm, walk two minutes to Maxwell Food Centre for chicken rice and other cooked-to-order hawker food, or into Chinatown Complex for a wider stall mix. Both are covered in the Chinatown food guide.

A simple half-day around the temple

  1. Chinatown MRT → Pagoda Street → Sri Mariamman Temple
  2. Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (main hall and museum)
  3. Lunch at Lian Xin (before 3pm)
  4. Smith Street / Chinatown Complex for dessert or tea
  5. From 18 September, return after 7pm for the Mid-Autumn lanterns on South Bridge Road

The same loop is written up as a mapped walk on the walking trail page.
