The Chinatown Heritage Centre at 48 Pagoda Street will close for one day of maintenance on 15 September 2026. Regular opening hours remain 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with last entry at 7:15 PM, on all other days.
The centre sits about 100 metres from Chinatown MRT Exit A (North East Line and Downtown Line). It is run with the Singapore Tourism Board, Chinatown Business Association, National Heritage Board, Urban Redevelopment Authority and Kreta Ayer Community Club.
What the centre shows
The museum reconstructs how families lived in Chinatown shophouses. Displays cover household objects, cramped rooms, and the daily work of coolies, hawkers and Samsui women in the 1950s. Plaques give the outline; the building itself is the main exhibit.
Visitors walk through spaces that once housed tenants under one roof. The layout is meant to show how families functioned in those rooms, not only to list dates and artefacts.
Guided programmes
Guided programmes add context that plaques cannot: why a specific item is on display, how neighbours shared space, and stories tied to people who lived here. Both tours listed below run 1.5 hours in English, for groups of up to 12. Private sessions can be booked through the centre’s private-session form. Both are also available on SG Culture Pass.
Under One Roof is a character-led tour of 1950s living conditions. Guides reenact a coolie, a hawker and a Samsui woman, speaking as tenants rather than lecturing from a script. The aim is to hear those voices in the same rooms, not only read them on the wall.
Insider’s Look is a private guided tour with a human connection to the people who occupied these spaces. Guides with knowledge of Singapore Chinatown’s culture and history go past the plaques into the meaning of specific exhibit items, how families used the shophouses, and personal anecdotes from lives lived here.

Recent comments on the tours name specific guides. One visitor called the centre a good place for a children’s excursion and said TC was engaging and easy for children to follow. Another praised Hanani, the Mandarin guide, for past stories of Singapore.
