Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre is running a free two-day conference on 17 and 18 October 2026 about whether Chinatowns stay useful as cities change. The English title is Chinatowns of the World. The Chinese title is 今日唐人街. Talks are in English and Mandarin in the Level 9 auditorium at 1 Straits Boulevard. Lunch is included if you pre-register.
Sessions are seated talks in a hall, about 12 minutes on foot from Maxwell MRT, aimed at people who work on heritage, shops, or culture. If you live around Kreta Ayer, the useful part is that the four session themes match arguments the district is already having this autumn.
Book Saturday and Sunday as two tickets
SCCC sold the weekend as two separate days. Saturday 17 October runs from 10am to 5pm. Sunday 18 October runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Each day has its own Peatix page and a matching Zoom webinar if you cannot sit in the auditorium. The listing is free, with pre-registration required, and no age limit.

The official page is the SCCC events listing. Use that if a Peatix form looks full or a Zoom link changes. Dates, hall, and language were taken from that page on 4 October 2026.
Four themes that already have a Chinatown street version
SCCC says panellists come from Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States. The two days cover arts and culture, festivals and events, traditional and new businesses, and gentrification. Those headings are the same fights you hear on Pagoda Street without a name badge.
Festivals first. Chinatown did not hang a giant Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road lantern tunnel for Mid-Autumn 2026. The inflatable rabbits of Bit Bit Forest are still on the SCCC roof garden until 13 December, 10am to 10pm, free. That is the large light-up this year, in the same building as the conference. Nine Emperor Gods rites run 9 to 18 October. Ahboy's 2 October list puts Yu Bao Dian at Blk 34 Upper Cross Street, Chin Swee View, still pending confirmation, nearest Chinatown MRT, and Singapore Yu Huang Gong at 150 Telok Ayer Street, nearest Telok Ayer. If a Sunday panel talks about festivals moving off the main road, that is the walk after you leave Level 9.
Businesses and gentrification sit next to that. The conference asks how traditional trades sit beside new ones, and what happens when rents and visitor patterns shift. Chinatown Complex still has its Q4 washing dates on the calendar. Smith Street still sells food workshops. The district's own Mid-Autumn street programme was the thing that vanished. Bring those examples if you go. The speakers will bring theirs from other cities.
Same Saturday, different hall, also free
On 17 October the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations is holding another free seminar in the same building, Diversity and Coexistence, on Chinese language and culture in Singapore. 8world posted the listing on 2 October. Start time is 10am. Venue is the Level 7 Multi-Purpose Hall. Themes listed are language and education, plus folk custom and belief. Audience listed as students, teachers, and the public. You cannot sit in Level 9 and Level 7 at the same hour. Pick Chinatowns of the World if you want neighbourhoods, shops, and gentrification. Pick the clan seminar if you want language classrooms and temple practice. Register on the SFCCA page, not on the SCCC conference Peatix.
How far it actually is from Chinatown streets
SCCC's visitor guide puts the building at 1 Straits Boulevard, Singapore 018906. Shenton Way station on the Thomson-East Coast Line is about 3 minutes from Exit 3. Tanjong Pagar on the East-West Line is about 7 minutes from Exit D. Prince Edward Road on the Circle Line is about 7 minutes from Exit 2. Downtown on the Downtown Line is about 12 minutes from Exit E. From Maxwell, walk Maxwell Road toward Straits Boulevard, the same 12-minute route we use for the roof garden rabbits. Weekend car parking is $3.82 per entry. The auditorium is on Level 9, so a 10am Saturday start means being through Level 1 reception earlier than 10.
Hall times, booking links, and the short reference listing also live on the event page, Chinatowns of the World International Conference 2026.
