Saturday 19 September 2026 is the one Chinatown date this Mid-Autumn that actually has a public timetable. Chinatown Business Association, Singapore Poon Yue Association, and Kong Chow Wui Koon take Smith Street from 9.30am. Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng grassroots groups take Kreta Ayer Square from 6pm. There is no large-format lantern run on Eu Tong Sen Street or New Bridge Road this year, so this Saturday is the day that still looks like a festival if you plan it.
Register by 9 September if a child wants to paint
The lantern painting competition is for ages 7 to 12. CBA's 1 September release, carried on CNA as a media release and reprinted by TTR Weekly, says children must register at chinatown.sg before 9 September 2026. Painting starts at 9.30am on the 19th in assigned slots. Each participant gets a $10 F&B voucher. If you skip the form, you can still watch, but you will not get a lantern to decorate.
Hungry Ghost month ends on 10 September, according to the Chinatown.sg festival note. The 19th is already in the eighth lunar month. Smith Street will be back to food-street traffic plus a stage, not getai.
Kong Chow Wui Koon opens the 2pm stage
The official opening is 2pm on the Smith Street main stage. Kong Chow Wui Koon, the Cantonese clan association on New Bridge Road, is billed for lion dance and wushu. After that comes a lantern-making talk, then ukulele and community singing at 3pm and again at 4.45pm. These are sit-and-watch slots. Bring water. Smith Street has little shade once the lunch crowd is out.
Games are timed. Make a Guess is at 3.30pm, with 30 F&B vouchers. Where Am I? runs at 4pm and 5pm, another 30 vouchers, and asks you to match clues to Chinatown places. Poon Yue Association staffs paper cutting, handmade crafts, calligraphy, and fan dyeing through the afternoon. Those tables are the part that still works if you arrive with no registration and a bored child.
After 6pm, walk to Kreta Ayer Square
The Smith Street programme winds down in the late afternoon. The grassroots headline, Light a Lantern, Share Your Blessing, starts at 6pm at Kreta Ayer Square. That night has a community lantern procession, mooncake and tea, and lantern riddles in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil. A lantern design competition is at Kreta Ayer Community Club the same day. If you only have one evening, this is the one. The community lanterns themselves stay up from 11 September to 4 October at the Square and on Banda Street.
Do not come on the 19th expecting the old overhead lantern tunnel. Chinatown Festival Committee chairman Peh Cheng Hoo said the committee is not dressing Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road for Mid-Autumn after 24 years of that format. Zaobao reported merchants worrying about footfall. The 19th is the committee and the business association's answer: a packed Saturday instead of a six-week light-up. Full moon is still Friday 25 September. That night will be quieter on the dual carriageway than tourists have been told by stale 2025 round-ups.
Chinatown MRT Exit A puts you on Pagoda Street. Smith Street is one block over. Kreta Ayer Square is behind the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple on Banda Street. If you are doing both halves of the day, eat between 5pm and 6pm on Smith Street or at Maxwell Food Centre, then walk.
