A nine-day Taoist festival on Chinatown’s doorstep
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is one of the most visually striking Chinese religious events in Singapore. In 2026 it runs from 9 to 18 October, covering the first nine days of the ninth lunar month. The welcoming rites are held on the eve; the sending-off, with processions to the water, is on the final night.
This is not a ticketed tourist show. It is a living temple festival. Visitors are welcome to watch from the street if they dress modestly, keep voices down during prayer, and stay out of the processional path.
What you will see
- Yellow flags, lanterns, and vegetarian food stalls around participating temples
- Devotees in white, many keeping a vegetarian diet for the full nine days
- Evening processions with palanquins, drums, and incense
- A waterfront sending-off on the last night, when the gods are believed to return
In and around Chinatown, activity concentrates toward Chin Swee / Upper Cross Street and other Taoist temples within walking distance of Outram Park and Chinatown MRT. Exact nightly start times are posted at each temple in the days before 9 October.
Visitor etiquette
- Shoulders and knees covered inside temple compounds
- Do not point cameras into inner sanctums; ask before photographing priests or mediums
- Do not step over incense urns, offerings, or the processional route
- If you eat nearby, many devotees are vegetarian that week — it is a good week to try temple vegetarian food, including Lian Xin
Pair it with Mid-Autumn
