A three-month stretch that makes Chinatown worth planning around
From mid-August through late October, Chinatown is one of Singapore’s strongest tourist neighbourhoods. The seventh lunar month is still underway, the Mid-Autumn street light-up is weeks away, and October brings the Nine Emperor Gods observances on the edge of the precinct. This is the season to walk the temples by day, eat at the hawker centres, and stay out for lanterns after dark.

Now through 11 September — Hungry Ghost Festival
The seventh lunar month runs 13 August to 11 September 2026. The main festival day, Zhong Yuan Jie, is Thursday 27 August. You will see roadside altars, joss-paper burning cages, and evening getai or wayang stages around Kreta Ayer, Smith Street, and Chinatown Complex. Front-row seats at getai are left empty for spirits — do not sit there. Do not step on offerings on the ground.

18 September to 20 October — Mid-Autumn Festival light-up
Chinatown’s six-week Mid-Autumn programme is the precinct’s biggest autumn draw. The official street light-up runs 18 September to 20 October 2026, nightly 7pm to midnight, along New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, South Bridge Road, and Upper Cross Street. Mid-Autumn Festival day itself is Friday 25 September 2026.
- Opening ceremony: 18 September, 7pm, Kreta Ayer Square
- Festive fair: People’s Park Square, typically 10am–10pm daily
- Mass Lantern Walk: Saturday closest to 25 September, Chinatown Point to Kreta Ayer Square
- Admission: free for the light-up, fair, and public performances

Stamp rally season
“Chinatown stamp rally” and “Chinatown stamp rally 2026” are among the searches that already bring people to this site. The second-edition rally has wrapped. Mid-Autumn editions in recent years ran as a free layered-stamp activity across participating shops for the full light-up window, with a souvenir postcard on completion. The 2026 station list is published closer to 18 September.

9 to 18 October — Nine Emperor Gods Festival
The nine-day Taoist festival of the ninth lunar month falls 9–18 October 2026. Processions, vegetarian abstinence, and send-off rites take place at temples around Chinatown and Chin Swee, including the Upper Cross Street area. Visitors are welcome to observe from the street; dress modestly and keep clear of ritual processions.

How to get here
Ride the North East or Downtown Line to Chinatown MRT (NE4/DT19). Exit A faces New Bridge Road and the lantern corridor. Maxwell (TE18), Telok Ayer (DT18), and Outram Park (EW16/NE3/TE17) are all within a 10-minute walk. Driving on festival weekend evenings is slow; use the MRT. Getting here and parking.
